WATER LEVEL AT KERR STABILIZING: Some NC Campsites Being Canceled in Lowest Lying Places
WATER LEVEL PROJECTIONS LOOK GOOD and it looks like Kerr Lake plans for the Memorial Day weekend can go pretty much as planned according to the US Army Corps of Engineers. However, some North Carolina State Recreation Area sites will be lost to higher than normal lake levels.
Several campers have informed Kerr Lake Park Watch today that their Memorial Day weekend reservations have been canceled.
The lake water level is predicted by the US Army Corps of Engineers to peak today at 305.1 feet above mean sea level. That level is expected to hold until Wednesday when the level is expected to drop to the 304 range in the next several days.
The full pool level of Kerr Lake is 300 feet above mean sea level.
Camping and other outdoor activities at the two Virginia State parks and the four U S Army Corps of Engineers campgrounds are not expected to be hampered by higher than normal water levels.
Because the seven NC State Recreation Areas have lower elevation campgrounds and facilities below the 320′ mark, some campsites, particularly those closed down on the water, are currently underwater and could possibly be so this coming weekend.
However, no communication has been received by Kerr Lake Park Watch from NC State Parks about any campsite closures.
According to the USACE, the lake level now and in the coming days depends on the watershed not receiving any additional rainfall.
