It is an excellent example of a state park system investing in an added-value attraction to an already stellar Kerr Lake park. It was created during the administration of former Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe. It has been expanded at least once since the initial phase, going from a Splash Pad to grow and include the Sprayground.

Occoneechee State Park is located on US 58, just east of Clarksville, Virginia. Find out more at: https://www.dcr.virginia.gov/state-parks/occoneechee

Also, there is a very active Friends of Occoneechee group.
