KERR LAKE CAMPERS GET THE BIG STINKY!
Well, you can always count on NC State Parks for these things, :
1. To un-inform,
2. To under-inform,
3. To miscommunicate,
4. And, if all else fails, just flat lie.
It’s the busiest time of the year for recreational camping. Campers staying at many of the seven NC State Recreation Areas are dealing with most of those things as they find sewer stations closed for repairs.
Of course, up until this article was being prepared, there was no mention of such repairs, nor was there anything on the NC State Parks website.
Kerr Lake Park Watch has been dealing with this kind of “non communication” for the past few years, although NC State Parks has never been famous for disseminating information to the campers and other people who actually use the parks at Kerr Lake.
There are signs at several of the parks that state that the dump stations are closed, but campers did not, and have not, up to this point, received advance notice that their “porta-potties” won’t work because the park where they are staying has a closed dump station.
This happened right before our eyes about a week ago as there was a camper backlog at Hibernia waiting to dump sewage, but the backlog was by campers who had been camping at Henderson Point.
Just a few days ago, another camper, Melissa Salisbury posted this on a social media site: “Currently staying at County Line on Kerr Lake in NC and we were very surprised to find that the dump station is not in service. Not good since this was to be a 9-night stay and we had planned to use our poop-tote to make it through! Their solution is for us to drive to Kimble Point which is not awful but not great for the final dumping but horrible for the mid-stay poop tote solution!”
“The camp host said they are waiting on parts so they cannot say when it will be completed. Furthermore, these upgrades are planned for other Kerr Lake campgrounds so beware!”
“I spoke with the NC Reservation Resolutions Department to see if we could get a refund if we left early. They said that they had no record of County Line not having an onsite dump station available at this time.”
“Kinda frustrating! We will be getting in touch with the actual park administration tomorrow to see what can be done.”
In checking around the parks, the sewage dump stations are closed for repairs at County Line, Bullocksville, and Henderson Point campgrounds which are three of the seven parks.
Since the NC State Parks system captures all contact information from park users, some disrepair to that extent seems worthy of alerts, emails, texts, and public communications on behalf of the Kerr Lake park headquarters, if not State Parks. But no, both entities continue to ignore opportunities to connect and communicate with the campers who actually use the parks. Either they do not communicate what is happening at and to the parks by sticking their heads somewhere, or they use the old “Gestapo” approach as in, “We are doing this, we don’t care how it affects you and we damn sure don’t want your opinion or input.”
We agree with the mounting number of disgruntled campers at the NC State Recreation Areas that officials will not take any crap…literally. But it certainly does stink up there a lot more lately.
Contacting NC State Parks for help or input is like throwing a glass of water on a forest fire…nothing. Look up your state representative or senator; they’re used to political stinks.
